Finding the Right Health Insurance in Indiana
Hoosiers are often very thrifty so it is no surprise that Indiana residents want the best health insurance possible at the least expense. The state offers some unique opportunities for coverage in addition to the standard choices.
One of these unique options is the HIP or Healthy Indiana Plan. This is to offer coverage for health care insurance to those who make between 22% and 200% of the FPL (Federal Poverty Level) and who are between 19 and 64 years of age. To be eligible, participants should not have other group insurance through an employer and should not be eligible for Medicaid. Premiums are low and based on income and provide for comprehensive health coverage.
Indiana residents also can choose from many private insurance programs such as Anthem-Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, CIGNA and Aetna. There are also companies who offer only short term insurance. These are usually the most expensive programs to choose but may be the only option at higher income levels than qualify for HIP.
As everywhere, the best buy for health insurance coverage is on the job group health insurance. Medical insurance is cheaper in larger groups because risk to the carrier is less in large groups. When offered, it is usually wisest to choice employer provided medical insurance.
One way to save on both individual and group plans is to avoid the use of tobacco. Most plans either offer a discount to nonsmokers or add a surcharge for smokers. Not only is avoiding smoking healthier, it is healthier for the wallet!
For those who do not work for an Indiana company that offers health insurance, there are cheaper options for some to private policies. This is called association group insurance. Some clubs and organizations such as business and trade groups form large risk pools and offer discounted coverage. An example of this would be group insurance from the AARP, available to anyone 50 or older. The cost of joining a group can save a great deal more money on premiums.
